In 1886, before the Club became professional, a small group of Nottingham Forest players, Fred Beardsley, Bill Parr and Charlie Bates, joined Dial Square FC, (the Club's first name) and brought their old red kit along with them. The club's rugby union section twice reached the final of the German rugby union championship, in 1940 and 1965. The club logo derives from the coat of arms of the city of Frankfurt, which itself is a reference to the one-headed imperial eagle of the 13th century.

The player with the highest number of appearances in the Bundesliga, Charly Körbel, spent his entire senior career as a defender for Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Guardian correspondent David Lacey opined that the combination play between Smith and Merson was "crucial to Arsenal's momentum" as was Rocastle's athleticism down the right. Eintracht hold the record for most consecutive away games without a win from 20 August 1985 to 25 August 1987. Paul Oßwald led Eintracht Frankfurt to the German championship in 1959 and the European Cup final in 1960. In 2018–19, Eintracht had the 21st highest attendance in Europe, ahead of such prominent clubs as Olympique Lyonnais, Paris Saint-Germain and Valencia CF.
